How are notarized documents secured?

To digitally sign and seal each notarized document, a notary public much have and use an identity-based digital certificate (X.509 tamper-evident certificate). This digital certificate authenticates their digital signature and electronic notary seal, which they use when signing and notarizing documents.

On PDF readers such as Foxit or Adobe, you can view the signature panel to see the notary's certificate. PDF readers will also display if the document has been tampered with since the time the notary certified the document.
